Products for coping with pandemic-related challenges: Supersmile

Sept. 4, 2020
In this series, Dr. Howard Glazer looks at products that can help practices during these challenging times. Here he reviews Supersmile products aimed at whitening and disinfecting.

Editor's note: In an effort to keep you informed of products that can help dental practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dental Economics columnist Howard Glazer, DDS, FAGD, has authored a special multipart series. In each installment, he reviews a product that can assist you during this challenging time.

Supersmile Extra White Pre-Rinse, Whitening Toothpaste, and Whitening Accelerator

Whiter and brighter smiles are always in demand, what if your go-to whitening product also helped fight germs? Supersmile Extra White Pre-Rinse contains 2% hydrogen peroxide which aids in the prevention of germs during procedures that produce the water spray known as aerosolization. As a bonus, it can help whiten patients’ teeth, especially when used with Supersmile’s Extra White Whitening Toothpaste and Whitening Accelerator, all developed by the late Dr. Irwin Smigel. Dr. Smigel is known as the father of aesthetic dentistry, and he made “bonding” (adhesive-resin dentistry) a household term.

Formulated with Calprox (calcium peroxide), the toothpaste dissolves the protein pellicle to which bacteria and stains adhere. Simply brushing with Supersmile will remove this pellicle and give the teeth a whiter appearance and smoother smile. A 2016 study showed that Supersmile Extra White Whitening Toothpaste delivered 15 times more whitening than control toothpastes, and lightened teeth up to nine shades in 30 days when used in conjunction with the Supersmile Whitening Accelerator. This toothpaste is safe to use on ceramic crowns, veneers, and adhesive resin restorations. The triple-mint flavor formula is kosher and free of silica, known allergens, BPA, animal by-products, parabens, and sulfates, and comes in an airless pump dispenser that lasts about four months. Patients should be instructed to use only a small, pea-sized amount of both toothpaste and accelerator on a dry brush, and brush twice a day for two minutes to achieve maximum results.

Supersmile is a formidable product line when attempting to overcome the risk of aerosolization while maintaining a high level of aesthetics.
