Maryville, Tenn. (May 21, 2013) — As Memphis crowned the world championship barbeque team, the city earned a spot among the nation’s most frequent flossers. According to the recently released “Look Who’s Flossing” Survey by DenTek, more than 35% of those surveyed in Memphis reported flossing at least once a day. Additionally, 68% report flossing several times a week, up from the national average of 64%.RELATED |Who made dental floss, and a floss documentary In honor of National Barbecue Month, and to congratulate the city of Memphis on its good oral care habits, DenTek was proud to pass out 20,000 free floss picks to festival attendees as an official Memphis in May sponsor. “We commissioned this consumer opinion survey to drill down into flossing habits and behaviors in America’s biggest cities,” said Charlotte Havely, vice president of marketing for DenTek, a national leader in oral care products. “The results out of Memphis were particularly encouraging. We were pleased to celebrate with the city at Memphis in May since it’s the perfect marriage of barbeque and floss picks.”RELATED |“Don’t make me feel guilty!” Consider changing your tone with hygiene patients It turns out, residents in this city known for barbeque learned the importance of keeping their grills clean at a young age. Almost half of the flossers in Memphis, 44%, began flossing during their childhood or teenage years. The survey also found that just as barbeque has regional variations, so do flossing habits. While other cities reported high numbers for flossing in their bathroom at home, Memphis had the second least amount of people to floss at home. Instead, Memphis ranks No. 1 for flossing anywhere — including in the car, at work, or in a restaurant bathroom. “We understand with today’s busier-than-ever lifestyles that you may forget or run out of time to floss. We’re all guilty of that at times. But if you’ll keep floss picks in your bag, your car, wherever is convenient, you’ll be able to floss on the go for a healthier and brighter smile,” Havely added. Additional nationwide survey findings include:
  • 1 in 10 reported never flossing
  • The biggest reason for not flossing is just not thinking about it (27 percent).
  • Why do people floss? 37% – for overall health 25% – recommended by dentist/hygienist 19% – to protect dental investments
