Perks survey part 2

April 5, 2010
As part of its "perks"/employee benefits survey, RDH eVillage directed three questions toward the use and maintenance of dental office uniforms.

RDH eVillage only has one medal to hand out to a responder to our survey about uniform costs and maintenance. We would like to award it to the Maryland reader who said, “The staff usually picks out the uniforms. It isn't always easy for five women to pick out three uniforms that we can agree on.”

The RDH eVillage survey on the “smaller perks” directed three questions toward the use and maintenance of dental office uniforms:

• Are uniforms provided and paid for by the employer?
• If the employee provides the uniform, is there a "dress code"? For example, do scrubs have to be a specific color or pattern?
• Who assumes responsibility for the laundering of staff uniforms?

A state-by-state breakdown of the results is provided below. But an overall national perspective about uniforms provided by the 840 survey respondents indicate the following:

• 55% of employers provide uniforms to employees.
• 75% of the employees are responsible for laundering uniforms.
• Among the 372 dental hygienists who are not provided uniforms by employers, only 15% have to follow a “dress code” office policy, adhering to a certain color, pattern, or style with the self-purchased uniforms.

The survey published in the March 12 issue of RDH eVillage will result in several upcoming articles. If you have not participated in the survey, please feel free to do so by clicking here.
