CORAL SPRINGS, Florida--For the first time, the Academy of Laser Dentistry has announced two recipients for the Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship Recognition for 2006.
Dr. P.G. Stathopoulou is a second-year resident in Periodontics and a PhD
candidate in Microbiology/Immunology at the University of Louisville. She
received a DDS from the University of Athens in 2003 and a MS in
Microbiology/Immunology from the University of Louisville in 2004. Dr.
Stathopoulou presented "Er:YAG Laser Reduces Post-Operative Discomfort
Following Osseous Resection for Periodontal Crown Lengthening".
James Thomas is in his junior year at Nova Southeastern University College
of Dental Medicine. He has been actively involved in biomaterials and laser
research during dental school in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Thomas' presentation was titled "A Comparison of the Thermal Effects of Lasers and Rotary Diamond Instrumentation on Tooth Structure".
Each oral presentation was part of the Scientific & General Sessions of the
Academy of Laser Dentistry's 13th Annual Conference, March 15-18 at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador in Arizona. Dr. Ana Triliouris, Chair of the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship program, announced a $100,000 financial development goal for this fund.
This scholarship program encourages undergraduate and graduate dental students to broaden their understanding of lasers in dentistry; it provides financial award to enable students to present their work at the Academy's annual meetings in either poster presentations or scientific and clinical lectures; and it encourages the study of the various laser wavelengths and their correct and safe use in dentistry. The establishment of the financial goal will allow us to encourage more students to study about laser technology and to bring many more students to our meeting to present their work.
Criteria for eligibility are determined by the applicant's demonstrated
academic achievement in the study of lasers in dentistry. The selection is
based on an abstract of laser research submitted for presentation. Funding
covered one year of ALD membership, full conference registration to
participate in Source 2006, Standard Proficiency Certification participation, air transportation, and hotel accommodations.
The scholarship program is named to honor the memory of Dr. Eugene M. Seidner, ALD's President from 1996-97. Dr. Seidner is most aptly described as a pioneer; both as a clinician for his early use of lasers in his dental practice as well as his contribution to the formation of the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
Known as a "giver", Dr. Seidner conveyed his broad vision to all who knew him in a manner that was uniquely warm and generous. The Academy is proud to honor his memory through this student scholarship.
Contributions may be made to the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship fund directly through the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
