Colgate and Sonicare team up to host "The Wellness Connection: The Relationship Between Oral & Systemic Health" in New York.

How can professionals learn the truth about one of the hottest topics in dental hygiene?

We can attend top-notch, knowledge-driven continuing-education programs such as the recent one sponsored by two respected leaders in oral care — Colgate and Philips Sonicare. These pioneering companies joined together to offer an extraordinary complementary seminar on the connection between oral and systemic health and its relationship to patient care.

The event took place on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at the Edith Macy Conference center in Briancliff Manor, N.Y., just 45 minutes from Manhattan. This was a perfect venue to inspire learning, well being, and innovative thinking! The free, limited-seating seminar focused on The Wellness Connection: The Relationship Between Oral & Systemic Health. The stellar national presenters — Betsy Reynolds, RDH, MS, and Casey Hein, RDH, MBA — enlightened and delighted the audience, while providing them with the most contemporary clinical and scientific evidence available.

The program was a success on two levels. First, the dental hygiene professionals who attended received knowledge about the vital research occurring in this area and gained practical applications. Second, victory was achieved for the two organizations that collaborated to bring this idea to fruition. It was a genuine win-win day.

This first co-program was an exclusive, invitation-only event. However, based on its success, the program may be launched in other cities nationwide. The hygienists whom I spoke with wanted to make sure that the following proponents of dental hygiene were thanked:

• Noel Paschke, RDH, MS, Philips Manager Professional Education

• Bettie Hamilton, Colgate Senior Manager Academic Affairs

• Karen Raposa, RDH, MBA, Colgate Senior Manager Professional Relations

• Gail B. Stoops, RDH, Philips Manager Professional Relations

Without their blindness to the often-read-about "oral care company wars," the knowledge-sharing could not have taken place. I look forward to seeing this trend in education grow so that more professionals can experience the triumph.
