Perio probe detects subgingival calculus for the treatment of periodontal disease.

LAKE ZURICH, Illinois--KaVo Dental has introduced the new perio probe for the DIAGNOdent Classic and pen.

The DIAGNOdent is a caries detection device that uses laser fluorescence to measure changes in the tooth structure caused by caries. The DIAGNOdent delivers an audible sound when caries is detected as well as a visual numerical readout quantifying the level of caries present in the tooth.

The new perio probe, available for both the DIAGNOdent Classic and pen versions, detects subgingival calculus for the treatment of periodontal disease.

The new perio probe uses laser fluorescence of subgingival calculus to determine quantification of calculus left behind by standard root planing and scaling. Calculus fluoresces differently than healthy tissue.

The device senses the difference and sends a signal to the numerical display and also presents an audible signal, indicating calculus has been identified. The perio probe can detect calculus concrements in periodontal pockets up to 9 mm deep.

Audible detection and measurable values make more patients aware of their calculus levels, leading to increased patient compliance with the recommended treatment.
