Dear Boss: You have the emotional capacity of a robot

Oct. 13, 2022
The author of this month's Dear Boss is speaking up on behalf of the entire dental team, and they're tired of being talked down to.

The Dental Office Manager Digest column “Dear Boss” is designed for office managers to be able to speak their minds by anonymously writing a “letter” to their boss. Send your letters to [email protected]. Depending on how many are received, your letter may take a while to appear in DOMD.

Dear Boss,

I need to tell you the truth. You are not a good person. I am writing this on behalf of our front office team and dental assistants. You started working in the office in 2019; since then you have always talked down to us instead of listening to us. We've tried to suggest ideas on how to make the office better, but you just shut us out and walk away. We listen when you talk, but you always talk over us and make some of us feel stupid. It upsets us, but we've come to understand that you don't have the emotional capacity to care—sort of like a robot. On the other hand, we are sensitive sometimes, and your negative way of communicating makes us feel worse.

You tell us what to do as though we are dumb, but we’re not. Most of your office staff have been working in dentistry our entire lives— even longer than you have been a dentist!—but you seem to think you know everything. Having a dental degree doesn’t make you an expert on everything; you're definitely not an expert on our jobs.

You need to think about how you handle your staff and patients, otherwise you may end up working alone.

Sincerely,

The dental team
