Chris is a territory rep in the Nashville, Tenn., area for Patterson Dental Supply. Be sure to send in your diagnosis for this month’s Diagnose the X-ray for a chance to win!Let me explain how the problem can occur, and how you can correct it.
X-ray answer ...The dark vertical line extending from the top to the bottom of the film was caused when the cassette was rotating around the patient during exposure and temporarily stopped when the cassette hit the patient's shoulder. When the cassette stopped, the film received additional exposure, thus creating the dark vertical line. Film exposing and handling tips:
  • Would be considered a patient slumping error
  • Have patient stand up straight and straighten neck
  • Have patient keep elbows tucked in to reduce shoulder height
  • Check lead apron for interference
