New KaVo PROPHYpearls are clog-free
KaVo America introduces a unique, new, air polishing powder — KaVo PROPHYpearls. PROPHYpearls are made with calcium carbonate powder. The salt-free formulation eliminates the salty taste associated with sodium bicarbonate powder routinely used with air polishing systems.
In contrast to conventional sharp-edged cleaning particles, PROPHYpearls are smooth, soft, round, and gentle to tooth structure and surrounding tissues. They are extremely efficient as they roll over the tooth with an infinite number of contact points for optimized cleaning performance. Plus, there is no chemical reaction with air humidity, keeping your air polishing system clog-free.
KaVo PROPHYpearls can be used with the KaVo PROPHYflex air polisher, as well as all other manufacturers' air polishing systems — a "pearl" of a product!

Thermal gutta percha condenser
Parkell introduces the Thermique — a solid-state, thermal condenser that simultaneously heats and condenses gutta percha, eliminating the need for an open flame or red-hot instruments. The tip instantly heats to the preselected temperature. As gutta percha is condensed, it flows against the sidewalls and into lateral canals.
Thermique comes with three calibrated tips corresponding to fine, medium-fine, and medium tapers. The tips can be easily bent to conform to curved canals — part of a proportional feedback system that maintains precise temperature within the canal. The control unit includes a rechargeable battery with massive capacity (3 amp hours). A warning light indicates when the device requires charging, and, if power becomes too low for operation, the unit automatically shuts itself off.
The Thermique with charger and three condenser tips costs $699. For more information, call (800) 243-7446 or visit www.parkell.com.
Airsonett Airshower mobile air purifier
Airsonett, Inc., offers a new Swedish mobile air purification system that delivers "clean room" quality air directly to the breathing zone of the patient. A unique, one-of-a-kind technology, the patented Airshower is a self-contained, mobile air purifier based on the principle of nonturbulent displacement air flow.
The height-adjustable Airshower is placed approximately 20 inches above the individual's head. The clean, slightly cooled air moves slowly downward and, because of its slightly higher density, displaces ambient air with negligible turbulence and mixing. This creates a zone of clean air quality around the head of the seated or supine individual.
Airsonette is a sister company of AirSon AB of Angelhom, Sweden, involved in medical sales. Founded in 1981, AirSon is a leading provider of "clean room" technology to companies such as Ericsson and Volvo.

TurboGas™ cuts twice as fast
CRYSTALMARK Dental Systems announces TurboGas™ as an option for all new CRYSTALAir™ model DV-1 air abrasion units. A patent-pending innovation, TurboGas acts as a turbo boost enabling you to cut through enamel and prep dentin at twice the speed of conventional compressed-air units. While still using one-fifth (on average) the amount of abrasive of other devices, a TurboGas-equipped machine approaches the cutting speed of a rotary handpiece, and is faster than a laser. Additionally, there is no increase in patient sensitivity when compared to the same setting as compressed air.
Switching between TurboGas and compressed air is accomplished with the flip of a toggle lever. Older CRYSTALMARK and Kreativ Mach 4 units can be retrofitted with TurboGas at the factory. For more information, call (888) 264-4337 or visit www.crystalmarkdental.com.

3M ESPE introduces faster LED curing light
3M ESPE introduces the Elipar™ FreeLight 2 curing light, a new cordless, high-intensity LED curing light capable of curing compatible materials in half the manufacturer's recommended cure times.
Elipar FreeLight 2 curing light has an intensity of approximately 1,000 mW/cm² — more than double the intensity of the original Elipar FreeLight. This allows 50 percent cure-time reductions for compatible materials that use photoinitiators in the wavelength range of 430 nm to 480 nm (camphorquinone). The new curing light has four time-settings for curing time between 5 and 20 seconds, making it 10 times more efficient than halogen bulbs, with no age-deterioration. Angulated light guides revolve 360° for hard-to-reach spots. No fan is required and operation is silent. The ventless unit is quick and easy to clean for excellent hygiene.

ADA accepts first defibrillators
The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs announces the awarding of its first Seal of Acceptance for a defibrillator to the Philips HeartStart OnSite and HeartStart FR2+ defibrillators.
Defibrillators provide treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a leading cause of death in the United States. More people die from SCA than from breast cancer, prostate cancer, AIDS, house fires, handguns, and traffic accidents combined. While CPR may help prolong the window of survival, it cannot restore a normal cardiac rhythm.
SCA is an electrical malfunction of the heart typically associated with an abnormal heart rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation. Defibrillation is recognized as the definitive treatment for ventricular fibrillation.
