4 tips to help you avoid embezzlement
By Donald P. Lewis Jr., DDS, CFE
Here are four more tips to help you avoid being a victim of embezzlement ...
- Ethical behavior starts at the top — Make sure that you set an ethical example for your staff to follow when it comes to ethical and legal behavior. Never give reason for a staff member to doubt your honesty and integrity. Doing so allows the staff to rationalize their unethical behavior because of the example you set.
- External audit — Consider having an external audit done within your practice by an independent accounting auditor.
- Investigation — Your practice should promptly investigate any reported incident of misappropriation or unethical behavior. Delaying the investigation will only lead to further problems and will send the wrong message to the staff.
- Job descriptions — Employees should be presented with formal written job descriptions. These job descriptions need to be part of the office employee manual.
