It is with great excitement that I have accepted the honor of representing PennWell as editor of Woman Dentist Journal. Three years ago, the first issue rolled off the presses. In joining with the American Association of Women Dentists, PennWell created this forum to be a voice for women, about women, and written by women dentists. It is still the only journal to address the specific needs of women dentists. Our lives are so complex and rich that our journal should reflect that variety and depth.
I also am the editor of the American Association of Women Dentists Chronicle. I barely got my feet wet when WDJ Publisher Lyle Hoyt named me editor of the entire journal. I am one of you - a solo practicing dentist (small business owner, CEO, executive director, and decision maker), wife of 26 years, mother of two adult children (Erin, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and National Louis University with a master’s degree in early childhood education, and Ryan, a soon-to-be-graduate of Northwestern University and aspiring producer), author of more than 40 articles, most which have appeared in PennWell publications, high school board member, police commissioner, tennis player, avid traveler and food critic, and an advocate for mentoring women dentists.
I am a native of Chicago (and a huge Cubs fan). Chicago is home to the American Dental Association and the AAWD, a driving force for women dentist advocacy and mentoring. This association between the AAWD, PennWell, and Chicago is strong. I am proud to be a component of this partnership.
This month, you will see a letter from me in the Chronicle. It is important to be good to ourselves - make time to find time. We need to find a few minutes of peace and solitude, be it in a book or a hot cup of tea at the end of the day.
Please e-mail me with your ideas for articles and for the Life Stories section of the Chronicle. We want to hear what is going on in your lives. Please recommend women who have made a difference to you for the Five questions, five answers section. And please support WDJ and the AAWD through membership. Together, we can advance women dentists, one woman at a time.
Thank you, Dr. Lori Trost for your editorial assistance during the past 18 months, Dr. Meg Scarlett, for your inaugural editorial direction, and Vicki Cheeseman for your three years as associate editor. We will seek authors, manufacturers, and programs that will personally and professionally enhance women dentists. I look forward to a continued market presence. With great mentors such as Kevin Henry and Mark Hartley at PennWell and Kristen Wright, my associate editor, I am positive that WDJ will continue to grow.
I look forward to spending time with you each month. If you have any questions, concerns, comments, suggestions, or just want to say “hi,” you may reach me at [email protected]. Enjoy your time with WDJ. I will enjoy bringing exciting concepts, visions, and personal strategies to you.
