IADR-Straumann Award

Nikolaos Donos of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute (London, U.K.) honored in recognition of his contribution to research in the field.

BASEL, Switzerland--At the 89th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research held in San Diego, Calif., the 2011 IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine was presented to Professor Nikolaos Donos of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute (London, U.K.).

Donos was honored in recognition of his contribution to research in the field of periodontal medicine.

Worth $5,000, the IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine is sponsored by Straumann and administered by the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR. Its objective is to recognize significant contributions in basic and/or clinical research in regenerative periodontal or peri-implant medicine.

The award was presented by Professor Ivan Darby, president of the IADR Periodontal Research Group, and Professor Michel Dard, head of preclinical research at Straumann.

“Professor Donos has made a significant contribution to understanding the mechanisms involved in the repair and regeneration of tissues that support teeth,” said Prof. Dard. "His research achievements have helped our efforts to regenerate the structures supporting compromised teeth and dental implants. This award is a further example of Straumann’s commitment to fostering and recognizing excellence in dental research. Indeed, we continue to be a leading global contributor to R&D in our industry.”

Nikolaos Donos, DDS, MS, FHEA, FDSRCSEngl., PhD, is known internationally as a consultant, specialist, educator, and researcher in periodontics and implant dentistry. He is head and chair of periodontology at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London. He is also director of research and chair of the department of clinical research.

He leads the oral health theme at the Joint UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedicine Center and is director of the Eastman Clinical Investigation Center. He joined the Eastman Dental Institute in 2001, and was appointed chair and head of periodontology in 2005. He has authored a large number of original publications, and has also contributed to specialist textbooks in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry.
