ANNAPOLIS, Maryland--The Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures 2010 symposium, “Shake It Up,” held June 10-13, 2010, in Tampa, Fla., was a success, according to organizers, attendees, speakers, and exhibitors. The annual conference is an event for anyone involved with infection control and safety in dental settings. Each year, experts share up-to-the-minute news, best practices, new guidelines, and other essential information. The symposium also had a healthy dose of fun, including a dine-around event, networking opportunities, and an auction. In 2010, the auction raised a record-breaking $150,000 for the OSAP Foundation. The 2010 program was packed with information that “shook things up.” OSAP offered complimentary pre- and post- conference sessions for consultants and educators that drilled into specific issues and provided resources. Added this year was a Global Summit on Dental Patient Safety addressing this World Health Organization initiative, and a New Product Forum in which presenting companies received the “Movers and Shakers Award”--a giant glass salt shaker filled with OSAP M&Ms. Dr. Michael Glick, dean of SUNY Buffalo Dental School, kicked off the program with a session that addressed dentistry’s potential new role in identifying chronic diseases in dental facilities. Wrapping up the first day of the symposium was Dr. Kathy O’Loughlin, executive director of the American Dental Association, who presented OSAP’s annual Dr. John Zapp Memorial Lecture. The program featured lectures to increase the knowledge and skills of all those who daily fight the battle for infection control and safety in dentistry. Dr. Dominick DePaola, president of the Santa Fe Group, delivered a presentation on leadership that resonated the mission of OSAP.One of the symposium speakers, Dr. David Reznik, director of the Oral Health Center of Grady’s Infectious Disease Program and president of HIVDent, said, “An absolute pleasure … great meeting, great people, great organization!”Some of the symposium content can be viewed online at: www.osap.org/.The 2011 OSAP symposium will be held June 9-12, 2011, in Plano (Dallas), Texas.
