Schein helps kids go "Back to School"

Henry Schein recently helped more than 2,400 children in 21 U.S. and Canadian cities return to the classroom well-dressed and well-prepared as part of the Company's 15th annual "Back to School" program.

Each year Henry Schein's "Back to School" program is eagerly anticipated by the children who participate, the human service organizations that serve them, and the Team Schein Members who sponsor the children. The program, which started modestly in 1998 by helping 150 children from Long Island, has now sponsored more than 18,000 children in need from communities across North America, providing the children with new school outfits and backpacks filled with school supplies.

The largest of the "Back to School" events took place at Henry Schein's world headquarters on Long Island, where 583 children identified by 10 local human service organizations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties participated. At the "Back to School" distribution event, which featured dinner, games, balloon animals, face painting, and music, the children received their new outfits personally selected and paid for by Team Schein Members, and backpacks filled with school supplies, books, and hygiene products. Additional 2012 Henry Schein "Back to School" events took place in Denver, Pa.; Sparks, Nev.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Bastian, Va.; Indianapolis; West Allis, Wisc.; Grapevine, Texas; American Fork and Sandy, Utah; Greenville, S.C.; Carlsbad, Calif.; Pine Brook, N.J.; Columbus and Boardman, Ohio; Mandeville, La.; Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario; Montreal; Halifax; Vancouver; and Concord, Ontario.

"It is the smiles of the children that we remember long after the event is over, and we hope that they take that same happiness and enthusiasm into the classroom," said Gerry Benjamin, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Henry Schein. "'Back to School' is an incredibly rewarding and special experience for Team Schein, as well as the supplier partners and local businesses that have donated products or provided other support to the program. This opportunity to directly give to people in need in our local communities and to know that we are helping to enhance the overall wellness of the participating children is a day that we look forward to all year."

The "Back to School" program is a flagship program of Henry Schein Cares, the Company's global social responsibility program, and is supported by the Henry Schein Cares Foundation.

Thanks to Henry Schein, World Oral Health Day gets its moment in Times Square

Henry Schein, Inc., recognized "World Oral Health Day" on September 12 with the creation of a photo collage that was posted on the Reuters sign in Times Square. Established by the FDI World Dental Federation, World Oral Health Day brings awareness to the significance of good oral health, its corollary effect on overall well-being, and the importance of preventing oral disease.

Dental has its day on Capitol Hill

Oral Health America (OHA), the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA), and more than 100 supporters assembled on Capitol Hill on September 12 to address the impact of our nation's economy on the overall health and well-being of American families. A survey by OHA, sponsored by Oral Healthcare Can't Wait and Procter & Gamble, found that Americans are more likely to take a pain killer for a toothache than to consult a dentist. Of those who don't regularly see a dentist, most (73 percent) give financial considerations as the reason.

"These findings confirm that many Americans are still struggling and that oral health suffers as a consequence," said Beth Truett, OHA's president and chief executive officer. "Dental disease is one of the leading chronic diseases in America and among the most preventable. OHA and the DTA's Oral Healthcare Can't Wait are collaborating on Fall for Smiles®, a promotion raising awareness of the importance of oral health to overall health. "

From left to right, Dr. Greg Folse, Outreach Dentistry; Joe Theissen, Voices for American's Children; Mary Foley, Medicaid-CHIP State Dental Association; Beth Truett, President & CEO, Oral Health America; Dr. Keith Suchy, Chair, Oral Health America Board of Directors; and Gary Price, CEO, Dental Trade Alliance.

"We have an obligation to make sure that our communities, business leaders, policy makers, health care providers, and schools are committed to the oral health of our nation," said Gary Price, DTA's chief executive officer. "All Americans need to understand the importance of oral health and make the care of their mouth a priority."

At the event, OHA and the DTA recognized U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) for his leadership in policy changes that help emphasize the importance of oral health throughout the country.

"Oral health care is a vital, yet often inaccessible, preventive health service," said Menendez. "This is especially true for at-risk populations for whom a lack of access to oral health care can lead to costly health complications down the road. I applaud Oral Health America, the Dental Trade Alliance and everyone here today for their efforts to promote proper oral health in our communities."
