BOSTON, Massachusetts--Following a nationwide search, Dr. Jeffrey Hutter has been appointed as dean of the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Hutter has served as dean ad interim for the past 10 months, a position he assumed following the death of former dean, Spencer N. Frankl.
In making the announcement, Boston University Medical Campus Provost Karen Antman said, "Dr. Hutter has a clear vision and plan to take the Goldman School of Dental Medicine to an ever higher level of excellence. His leadership and commitment to dental education combined with his 11-year tenure at GSDM have prepared him well for this opportunity."
"My overarching goal is to become a premier provider of didactic and clinical dental education and a world class research institution while expanding initiatives and development opportunities to prepare the school for a great future. I look forward to working with and engaging the faculty, staff, students and alumni as we proceed together to achieve this goal," said Dr. Hutter.
In an e-mail message to the medical campus announcing Dr. Hutter's appointment, Provost Karen Antman wrote, "Boston University President Robert Brown and I are grateful for Dr. Hutter's exemplary leadership over the past year. We are delighted with the recommendation of the search committee and are confident that GSDM will thrive under the direction and energy of this uniquely qualified dean."
Prior to being appointed dean ad interim last October, Dr. Hutter served as BU GSDM's senior associate dean and is a professor and Herbert Schilder Chair of the Department of Endodontics and director of the school's postdoctoral program in endodontics.
From 2002 until his appointment as senior associate dean, he was the school's associate dean for academic affairs. He joined BUGSDM in 1997.
A diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, Dr. Hutter is a past director of the ABE and the Board of Directors of the American Association of Endodontists, and a past AAE president.
Active in the American Dental Association, Dr. Hutter became chair of the organization's Commission on Dental Accreditation in July 2007 after having served as vice-chair of the commission.
He is also chair of the Educational Review Committee on Endodontics, a past chair of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and is serving his fourth term as chair of the ADA's Evidence-based Dentistry Advisory Committee.
Dr. Hutter retired with the rank of captain from the United States Navy Dental Corps in 1996 after a 21-year career. His last assignment was chair of the Department of Endodontics and Director, Postdoctoral Endodontics at the Naval Dental School, Bethesda, Md.
Upon retirement from the Navy and prior to assuming his present position at Boston University, he was director, Postdoctoral Endodontics at the School of Dentistry, University of Maryland.
Dr. Hutter holds a DMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently an adjunct assistant professor of endodontics; a Certificate in Endodontics from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School; and an MA in Education and Human Development from the George Washington University.
