WASHINGTON, D.C.--The ADEAGies Foundation invites entries for the 2009 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement (The Gies Awards).
The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, PhD, honors individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation, and achievement in global oral health and dental education, research, and leadership.
The Gies Awards will be presented at a celebration in conjunction with the ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition. The 86th ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition will be held March 14-18, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz. The Gies Awards will be conferred March 14, 2009.
"Last year's inaugural Gies Awards proved inspirational for dental educators of all kinds. The ADEAGies Foundation anticipates once again a large field of nominations for these important awards that celebrate the work of our community and honor Dr. Gies' legacy," said Richard W. Valachovic, DMD, MPH, president of the ADEAGies Foundation and Executive Director of the American Dental Education Association.
The honorees will be selected by a distinguished panel of judges consisting of the ADEAGies Board of Trustees. Bestowed at a black-tie dinner celebration, the Gies Awards will offer significant visibility both within and outside the dental education community, drawing much needed attention to the role of dental education and educators in enhancing global oral health and education.
The 2008 Gies Awards honorees were (in alphabetical order): Michael C. Alfano, DMD, PhD; Marcia A. Boyd, DDS, MA; Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD; David Satcher, MD, PhD; Harvard School of Dental Medicine; Louisiana State University School of Dentistry; National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research; University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery; and University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
