Program will remain in effect for 2008-09 academic year.

WASHINGTON, DC--The American Dental Education Association and the American Association for Dental Research have announced that they will continue the AADR/ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program for the 2008-09 academic year.

The AADR/ADEA ADCFP is a year-long program for dental and allied dental students and their mentors who are interested in pursuing careers in academic dentistry. The application deadline for the 2008-09 program is February 25, 2008.

"The Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program has been a successful opportunity for cultivating students interested in academic dentistry. ADEA is proud to work with AADR to offer the Fellowship for another year and encourages interested students to apply," said ADEA President James Q. Swift, DDS.

The AADR/ADEA ADCFP began in 2006 with a grant from the American Dental Association Foundation and has been supported by AADR and ADEA for the last two years. The Fellowship, which is designed to reach students attending all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and allied programs that are ADEA members, fosters a recruitment effort, encouraging and preparing students to enter academic dentistry.

Since the program's inception, 22 students have completed the Fellowship, and all have indicated that they will be seeking academic positions after completing their dental education.

The 2008 AADR/ADEA ADCFP is a year-long Fellowship for 10 dental students and one allied dental student and their mentors beginning in the summer of 2008 and ending at the close of the 2008-09 academic year. The Fellowship's components include:

* A day and a half summer fellow/mentor training session
* Biweekly collaborative meetings between fellows and mentors
* Faculty/administrator interviews
* Teaching practicum in four settings
* Career reflection essays
* Research practicum
* Poster presentation at the 2009 AADR/ADEA Annual Session
* ADCFP portfolio
* ADCFP evaluation

Announcement of the 2008 AADR/ADEA ADCFP Fellows will be at the ADCFP Reception on March 31 at the 85th ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in Dallas.
