Move might lead other insurers to follow suit.

WHITE ROCK, British Columbia--LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. has announced that Northeast Delta Dental is reimbursing members for the cost of oral cancer exams performed with VELscope the oral cancer screening system.

The VELscope system is the only adjunctive screening aid utilizing proven fluorescence visualization technology.

In a letter to participating dentists, Dr. Michel Couret, Northeast Delta Dental's chief dental officer, said, "The dental practice is the first line of defense against oral cancer. At a minimum, all practices should be conducting conventional oral cancer exams using palpation and a visual inspection of the oral cavity under incandescent light."

Dr. Michel added, "Increasingly, many practices are opting to supplement this exam with a screening using an adjunctive device, such as the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System. This painless, noninvasive screening typically adds only two to three minutes to the exam, and is relatively easy to incorporate into the practice."

David Cox, president of LED Dental, said, "We are gratified by this decision by Northeast Delta Dental, which is a powerful vote of confidence in the VELscope system's ability to make it easier for dentists to discover precancer and early stage oral cancer," Cox added. "We expect that other insurance providers will surely take note of this development, and we look forward to similar
announcements by more insurers in the future."
