Difficulty in finding a job as a dental hygienist in Michigan
Observation: First of all, we would like to point out that Michigan was second only to California in terms of responses to the salary survey. So the fact that the state is 13 percentage points above the national average for hygienists who think it is very difficult to find a job catches our attention.
Length of time since last pay raise in Michigan
Observation: The pay raises referred to above generally trend along the national averages. The percentage that stood out among Michigan hygienists was the one for a raise received more than five years ago. The national average in this category is 19%, so it has been a half a decade or more for almost a third of dental hygienists there.

Observation: Michigan’s pay rates are trending lower than the national averages.
Descriptions of pay arrangements based on production or commission
- Daily rate of $75.00 plus 20% of production.
- 33% of what I produce in my room. It is not based on our fees but on what the insurance pays. My vacation pay is less than what the other hygienists earn for vacation pay. They work hourly and are paid the hourly rate for vacation. My vacation pay is based on what I earned before I changed to production-based pay approximately 15 years ago.
- Office keeps talking about it for two years now and has us working hard to push products and services but no arrangements for pay has ever been made.
- 25% collections. If $1,000 over, I get an additional 5% bonus of total collections.
- Every day, the practice goal is $4,400. At the end of the month, total collections is tallied and every $1,000 over our minimum I receive an extra 15 cents per hour. This usually gives me an extra $2.75 to $9 per hour, depending on how productive the month was.
