Henry Schein receives ‘Spirit of the Race' award
Henry Schein, Inc. celebrated another victory as it received the "John E. McGorry Jr. Spirit of the Race Award" at the recent Marcum Workplace Challenge at Jones Beach State Park. Taking place less than 20 miles from Henry Schein's global headquarters in Melville, N.Y., the event served as a platform for Team Schein members to demonstrate their commitment to teamwork for a charitable cause, as well as to underscore the importance of overall health and wellness.
Nearly 300 Team Schein members and their families crossed the finish line at the annual Marcum Workplace Challenge and were given the "John E. McGorry Jr. Spirit of the Race Award" in front of more than 8,000 runners and walkers from the Long Island business community. The 3.5-mile run-walk is Long Island's largest participatory sporting event and charity fundraiser, attracting employees from more than 200 Long Island companies, government offices, and non-profit organizations. Henry Schein dedicated this year's company participation to Team Schein's Goodwill Ambassador, Teddy Philson, who passed away early this year. Teddy fully embodied Henry Schein's culture and values, and his 48-year example of excellence continues to inspire all of Team Schein. In memory of Teddy, the Company proudly displayed some of his famous words, "Let's start it up good people," on their shirts the day of the race.
"The Marcum Workplace Challenge Race gave Henry Schein the opportunity to further develop as a cohesive team, continue our commitment to health and wellness, and at the same time, along with many of the top companies on Long Island, support very worthwhile charities," said Craig Gluff, supervisor of facilities at Henry Schein.
The Marcum Workplace Challenge Race, in its eighth year, benefits three local charities — The Long Island Children's Museum, Long Island Cares: The Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the Children's Medical Fund of New York. Since its inception in 2005, $300,000 has been raised for local charities. Marcum LLP hosts the event as a way to connect Long Island businesses with the community and with each other, while raising funds for charity.
ISO adopts Ultradent testing method
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently adopted the notched-edge shear bond strength testing method of Ultradent Products Inc. as a new standard. Ultradent created, refined, and has taught the notched-edge testing method over a number of years, resulting in a reproducible technique that many research organizations across the globe use today. After conducting a rigorous study involving over 20 independent organizations, ISO determined the notched-edge method superior to other shear bond strength testing methods previously available.
ISO Standard 29022 specifies a shear test method used to determine the adhesive bond strength between direct dental restorative materials and tooth structure, such as dentin or enamel. The method is principally intended for adhesives and includes substrate selection, storage and handling of tooth structure, as well as the procedure for testing. A key element within the testing is a notched-edge crosshead used to shear the bonded specimen with an even distribution of force.

New Toronto Implant Institute teaching center helps dentists develop surgical skills
The Toronto Implant Institute recently announced the grand opening of its teaching center, which will offer practitioners further education on dental implants and improve their surgical techniques. Leading the charge in opening the new teaching center is Natalie Wong, DDS, a prominent prosthodontist based in Ontario. The facility also doubles as an imaging center, using Carestream Dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital intraoral sensors.
The center now offers hands-on surgery classes led by Dr. Wong, with cases provided by the doctors participating in the program. Classes are limited to four people per session, and each session spans six to nine months with one meeting per month. The class size is limited by design, in order to focus the learning and tailor it to each doctor's needs. The participating doctors will bring their own patient cases with them to the first class, and surgeries will be scheduled for the remaining sessions. In addition to hands-on surgery training, Dr. Wong will lecture during the classes and host guest speakers.
"I'm very excited by the growth of the Toronto Implant Institute and look forward to teaching many practitioners at this incredible facility," said Dr. Wong. "My goal is to provide a high-level training facility, with individualized learning experiences, enabling these clinicians to improve the quality of dental health in their communities."
The new teaching and imaging centre is powered by Carestream Dental's CS 9300C Select and two RVG 6100 sensors.
