Editor's Note [Being there ...]

June 1, 2005
We all talk about those “first patients” we had in the clinical setting in dental school.

We all talk about those “first patients” we had in the clinical setting in dental school. Remembering those times, it is no surprise for many to find out that my father was my first patient - there to offer his support. Not only did he weather every recommended treatment and the time it took, but he willingly was there as a board patient! Moving forward, as construction began on my “new” office, he was, once again, there. And so it has been, long after those experiences, his confidence, encouragement, and wisdom continuing to guide and sustain me, especially in times of celebration or perhaps uncertainty. My father has been a very present example, planting seeds that will be ripe for harvest in years to come.

With this issue of Woman Dentist Journal, we are proud to showcase two national leaders in our profession, Dr. Joy Jordan and her father, Dr. Eugene Jordan. Read on as she shares the wisdom and spirit gained from generational empowerment and the example her father and family have provided. Next, go to Dr. Mary Sue Stonisch’s fantastic father/daughter restorative makeover. How many opportunities do we all have to offer a smile that transcends age? We also present current information on latex gloves, inflammation, and dental tools that empower us.

Having recently returned from the IDS - the International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany - I am truly more energized and amazed as to what is coming in dentistry. Lasers are here to stay and will have more applications, being especially integral in periodontal diagnosis and treatment. After hearing the word konkrement multiple times, I finally asked about it and was told it was not concrete, but calculus. Yes, I was lost in translation! Implants are getting easier and more prevalent. Plus, watch for new handpieces and more ergonomic equipment to enter the marketplace. It was truly a great trip with lots of good memories.

Make sure you don’t miss the current learning opportunities that welcome your participation. Check out the First Wednesday Study Club. Also, PennWell has partnered with Invisalign to bring you online CE that will be available for the entire next year. Look it up at www.wdjournal.com. These great learning formats are here to connect you!

Here’s to the anticipation of a summer filled with fun, family, friends, and more learning. By the way ... thanks, Dad, and thanks to all the fathers for being there!
