Late Maryland dentist's estate to fund scholarship for area dental students.

The Board of Trustees of The Community Foundation of Frederick County, MD, Inc. announces The William E. Colliver
Memorial Scholarship Fund. Founded by Dr. Colliver's wife Ann and four children-Katherine, Elizabeth, William, and Robert-the fund provides scholarships to U.S. citizens who are Frederick County residents pursuing a post-secondary education. Preference is given, but not limited, to students enrolled full-time at
the undergraduate level at University of Maryland studying any major. Academic performance and community service, not financial need, will be used to determine the scholarship recipient. The first William E. Colliver Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Dr. Colliver himself was a graduate of University of Maryland's School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry for over forty years in Frederick, serving as a member and past president of the Frederick County Dental Society and as vice president and a member of the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Dental
Association. He was actively involved in the local community, serving on the Board of Directors of Citizens Nursing Home, as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of Braddock Heights, and as a member of the Elks Club and Rotary Club of Frederick. Ann Colliver shares that, "This is a true story. When my husband decided to attend dental school, finances were tight. A friend generously offered to pay Bill's tuition, which my husband wanted to treat as a loan and pay back. The friend refused, asking, instead, that Bill do the same for someone else in the future. When Bill passed away, I remembered that story. Starting this fund in Bill's memory is our way of helping someone else out just as Bill was
helped."

The Community Foundation makes it possible for individuals, families and organizations to honor the legacies of deceased members of the community through the creation of memorial funds. These funds support a range of charitable
causes throughout Frederick County, from awarding scholarships to providing grants to worthy nonprofits.
