Medical Gloves: Towards Safer and More Effective Protection

(Small Group Workshop by Esah S. Yip, D.Sc.)

The effectiveness of gloves as a barrier to diseases is an important requirement for dental care and healthcare professionals. Different glove materials show differences in barrier effectiveness. It is therefore critical that glove users be given all relevant information concerning the safe-use of gloves, to enable educated glove choices to be made. This course reviews results of comparative studies by researchers in U.S. on the barrier effectiveness of gloves currently available. In addition, the dramatic reductions of latex protein allergy in workplaces through the use of the new generation of low-protein latex gloves, as reported by hospital studies in the U.S., Canada and Europe, are also discussed. 2 CEUs
