Karen Butler, a 56-year-old tax consultant in Toledo, Ore., went into surgery for a dental implant with a standard Oregonian accent and emerged sounding completely different. She now talks with an accent that sounds one part South African, one part Irish, and one part, well, ....
A rare condition, called foreign accent syndrome, is thought to be the cause of Butler's new accent. Foreign accent sydrome is caused by a small stroke that affects a specific area of the brain and alters speech patterns so it sounds as if the person has a foreign accent.
