New research from Queen Mary, University of London in collaboration with research groups in the United States sheds light on why periodontal disease can become more common with old age.
The study, published in Nature Immunology, reveals that the deterioration in gum health that often occurs as we age is associated with a drop in the level of a chemical called Del-1. Researchers say that understanding more about this chemical and its effects on the body's immune system could help in the treatment or prevention of serious periodontal disease in the future.
