American Association of Endodontists calls for clinical research proposals to produce high-level evidence relating to endodontic treatment.

CHICAGO--The American Association of Endodontists and its philanthropic arm, the AAE Foundation, has announced a call for clinical research proposals to produce high-level evidence relating to endodontic treatment.

This request represents collaboration between the AAE's Research and Scientific Affairs Committee, the evidence-based Endodontic Committee and the AAE Foundation to expand the specialty's body of scientific information, and to promote the practice of evidence-based endodontics.

"It is vital to the advancement of the specialty that we build upon the work of previous generations of endodontists," said AAE Foundation President Denis E. Simon III, D.D.S., M.S., of Baton Rouge, La.

"With the art and science of endodontics continuing to grow, we must take it upon ourselves to prove the importance of and sustainability of endodontic treatment as the preferred choice for patients."

The objective of the AAE's RFP is to solicit research to answer the following question:

Population: In patients with endodontic disease (pulpitis, apical periodontitis, non-healing, potential for disease),

Intervention: does endodontic treatment (initial treatment, retreatment, apical surgery, intentional replantation, autogenous transplantation, or a specific technique thereof),

Comparison: compared to alternative treatment (alternative endodontic treatment or technique thereof, extraction without replacement, replacement with different modalities),

Outcome: result in better outcomes (healing, function, quality of life, satisfaction)?

Proposals may be submitted by U.S. and Canadian, for-profit and non-profit, public and private organizations, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state/province and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government, as well as international academic and scientific institutions. Multi-center collaborations are strongly encouraged.

The estimated total funding (direct and indirect) available for up to eight years is $4,053,000. For the first two to three years of patient enrollment, the annual award under this RFP will be up to $857,500. In the later four to five years of follow up, analysis and reporting, the annual award will increase to $467,000.
