Biolux Research Ltd. is pleased to announce the filing of a new U.S. patent application for the use of phototherapy and orthodontics. The invention relates to methods and apparatuses for use in orthodontics, and in particular to methods and apparatuses useful for accelerating, controlling, or improving the quality of tooth movement during orthodontic treatment when using a range of orthodontic techniques and materials.

Orthodontic treatment timelines are typically 24 months, due to the time required for the natural processes of bone resorption and bone regeneration as tooth roots move through the bone. During orthodontic treatment, brackets and wires, or clear retainers, provide the mechanical forces to move the teeth over time through a series of adjustments. The typical patient may experience discomfort and pain, as well as increased self-consciousness and change of diet. There are approximately 2.5 million patients undergoing orthodontic treatment annually in North America, with the number one patient complaint being the duration of treatment. There is very strong interest from the patient and orthodontist communities to decrease the overall treatment timeline for orthodontics, particularly in the adult orthodontics market.

Combining the proprietary Biolux phototherapy technology with traditional orthodontic treatment materials and processes allows for the treatment to overcome the natural limitations and timeline of bone turnover or regeneration as the tooth root moves through the bone, and may allow for use of alternate or advanced orthodontics materials in the future. The proprietary Biolux technology is non-invasive and infuses light energy directly into the bone tissue, and is compatible with traditional brackets and wires as well as clear orthodontic retainers.

“We are very focused on developing novel solutions to challenges in dentistry, expanding our intellectual property portfolio for phototherapy and orthodontics, and in increasing value for our shareholders,” states Kevin Strange, President and CEO of Biolux. “Orthodontics is a significant market within dentistry, with a clear need and desire to significantly reduce treatment timelines, and we believe we have the breakthrough innovation to revolutionize orthodontic treatment.”
