Our patients often want whiter, brighter smiles and instant gratification. Philips provides two in-office options: Philips Zoom QuickPro and Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed. These in-office products can be enhanced with take-home products. This article will explain these products.

A new in-office whitening product, Philips Zoom QuickPro, can help to satisfy patients' desires to have brighter smiles in record time with little or no sensitivity. The process involves very little chair time to whiten by up to four shades in 10 minutes. The best results are seen after a prophylaxis on yellow- or brown-stained teeth (versus gray- or tetracycline-stained teeth). A 20% hydrogen peroxide whitening varnish is applied, followed by a sealant layer that dries in seconds and locks the varnish in place. In 30 minutes, the patient wipes or brushes off the thin film to reveal a brighter smile.

It is suggested that the patient be at least 18 years of age and in good general and dental health. Pregnant or lactating women and patients with serious health conditions should consult their physicians prior to a whitening procedure. Protective eyewear for the patient and clinician is necessary for safety, and vitamin E oils should be brushed on the patient’s lips for comfort. Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed, another in-office product, is clinically proven to whiten teeth by up to eight shades in 45 minutes. (1) The use of the Zoom Light Activator in conjunction with Zoom whitening gel is more effective in whitening teeth than the use of the Zoom gel alone. (1) Clinical results confirm that, although the 25% hydrogen peroxide gel clearly whitens the teeth, the use of the Zoom Light Activator significantly enhances the whitening. (2)

The Philips Zoom Ultimate Protocol combines Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed chairside whitening with the Philips Zoom NiteWhite take-home treatment for optimal whitening results. The Philips Zoom Ultimate Protocol involves four 15-minute Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed sessions, followed by two to four treatments using the Philips Zoom NiteWhite Maximum White take-home kit. Philips has added bioactive materials to the Zoom whitening treatments, which can enhance the protective effects of the product and reduce or prevent alterations in the dental structure. (3) The take-home bleaching gel contains amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), which has been shown to enhance the smoothness and glossiness of the teeth and to improve color by at least eight Vita shades. (1) The addition of the ACP provides 10% better long-term (six months) whitening efficacy than the traditional bleaching gel tested. The long-term safety of the product has also been demonstrated; no adverse effects, gingival or otherwise, were noted by day 90 or day 180. (4)
