DentistryIQ.com recently asked Liz Roques the brand manager for oral care at Chattem, some questions about the award and ACT Advanced Care Plaque Guard.
DentistryIQ: ACT has been a very popular oral care brand for many years. What led to the company’s strategy to develop the Advanced Care Plaque Guard?
Roques: Plaque is the top oral concern among adults, but ACT has historically focused on anti-cavity products. Advanced Care is ACT’s first antiplaque and antigingivitis mouthwash. It kills 99% of the bacteria that can cause plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath, helping improve oral hygiene.
DentistryIQ: Can you describe some of the innovations that you have made to this current generation of ACT?
Roques: ACT Advanced Care contains 0.07% Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) to help reduce the plaque that leads to gingivitis. The formula also contains a unique three ingredient cleaning system, and 5% Xylitol, to leave your whole mouth feeling clean.
DentistryIQ: Based on your research, what is the most effective application of Advanced Care Plaque Guard as part of a home care routine?
Roques: Difficulty with brushing and poor oral hygiene compliance results in plaque build-up. Many patients do not brush for long enough or properly, and as a result do not effectively remove plaque, especially along the gumline and interproximally. Patients with plaque and gingivitis can benefit from daily rinsing with a CPC mouthwash such as ACT Advanced Care. Advanced Care should be used after the normal brushing and flossing routine. Adults and children 6 years of age and older should vigorously swish 20 mL of rinse between their teeth for 30 seconds twice a day and then spit out.
DentistryIQ: Does Chattem believe the role of oral rinses will remain a viable part of home care in the future? If so, why?
Roques: Yes. Mouthwash is a safe and effective adjunct to regular oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing.
