Tulsa, Oklahoma, the homebase for Dental Economics, RDH, DentistryIQ.com, and a host of dental e-newsletters, received some good news/bad news in the dental arena recently.

First, the good news — Tulsa is one of 24 public water supplies in the state to be recognized recently for its fluoridation. It is an award for a "consistent level of optimally fluoridated water" in 2011.

Now the bad news. A temporary restraining order and injunction was granted Tuesday by a judge to stop a vendor at the Tulsa State Fair from offering teeth whitening services.

"It's a felony to practice dentistry without a license in Oklahoma," said Susan Rogers, executive director of the State Board of Dentistry. "You think teeth whitening is not a big deal, but it is a big deal."

The vendors were using 35% carbamide peroxide. Ten percent is what is recommended, Rogers said.
