Last month we asked you to Diagnose the X-ray below and send in your answers on what you think the operator may have done wrong. Today we provide you with the image's diagnosis!
Melanie Mitchell CDA-Emeritus, BGS, is a dental assistant instructor at Wichita Area Technical College. She correctly identified what the operator inadvertently did to achieve a poor quality image. Congratulations to Melanie, who won a $25 gift card. Let me explain how the problem can occur, and be corrected.X-ray answerThis imaging error occurred with a soft cassette pouch. An operator removed and incorrectly reversed the hinged flexible phosphor screens. When the film was loaded, it was sandwiched between the back of the screens not in direct contact with the phosphor screens — causing very minimal exposure to the film, thus creating the light density, poor contrast image.Film exposing and handling tips
  • Load and sandwich film — the phosphor screens need to face each other
  • Phosphor screen will have a dull appearance — should face film
  • The backside of the screens have a shiny appearance — should not face film
  • In between each exposure, inspect each screen for wear and stains
