PARSIPPANY, New Jersey--GlaxoSmithKline, makers of Sensodyne, have announced the arrival of new Sensodyne Pronamel Toothpaste.

The toothpaste is a multi-benefit dentifrice designed to help reharden softened tooth enamel and protect against sensitivity. Pronamel is formulated to be pH-neutral and minimally abrasive while providing high fluoride availability, caries protection, and fresh breath.

Pronamel is designed to help protect against tooth wear--an emerging condition in oral health. Advances in dental care mean teeth are lasting longer; however, modern diets can be hard on tooth enamel. Acid-containing food sources like soft drinks, fruit juices, wine and even fruit can demineralize and soften the tooth surface, making it more susceptible to abrasion from brushing.

This can lead to tooth wear, and even dentin hypersensitivity. Brushing twice a day with Pronamel can help restrengthen the softened enamel layer, increasing its resistance to acid attack.

To help combat tooth wear and acid erosion, Pronamel's formulation includes highly available fluoride as compared to other everyday toothpastes. Evidence suggests that fluoride may be effective in limiting the progression of erosion and abrasion, and may harden the tooth surface to make it more resistant to acid attack. In addition, Pronamel has a neutral pH of 7.1 (7.4 when diluted 1:3 with saliva), which helps protect against enamel or dentin demineralization.

Tooth wear occurs as a result of chemical erosion, mechanical abrasion or naturally-occurring attrition. Dental professionals can help patients control the progression of tooth wear and acid erosion by looking for signs and symptoms, which may include: loss of luster and texture on the tooth surface, teeth that appear yellow, translucency or thinning of the incisal edges, and small cracks or minor fractures.

In addition, hypersensitivity may occur at any stage of acid erosion. Although enamel wear can't be reversed, Pronamel can help protect teeth against future wear and sensitivity.

"Given today's modern diet, it's no surprise dental professionals are seeing an increase in patients whose teeth show signs of tooth wear and acid erosion," states Jay Martorelli, associate brand manager, GlaxoSmithKline. "By recognizing the early signs and symptoms of tooth wear, and recommending Pronamel, dental professionals can help patients protect their teeth from the damaging effects of acid erosion."
