Arthur A. Dugoni, D.D.S., dean of the University of the Pacific's School of Dentistry, has been elected president of the ADA Foundation (ADAF), the charitable arm of the American Dental
Association (ADA).

Dr. Dugoni, a San Francisco orthodontist, is a former president of the ADA (1988-89) and the American Association of Dental Schools. He succeeds retiring ADAF president, Anthony Volpe, D.D.S., a senior executive with the Colgate-Palmolive Company. Dr. Volpe is a founding member of the ADAF board
and served as president for seven years.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to help the ADA Foundation continue to build on its laudable mission and charitable purpose," Dr. Dugoni said. "While a formidable challenge, this is a tremendous opportunity to continue to bring dental practitioners, educators, researchers, manufacturers, dental trade associations and laboratory groups together to work for the betterment
of oral health for all people."

Dr. Dugoni's work in education and organized dentistry has earned him many awards, including the Presidential Citation and the Distinguished Service Award from the ADA, the Pierre Fauchard Academy Gold Medal and the American College of Dentists' William John Gies Award.

He was named to the FDI (Fédération Dentaire Internationale) World Dental Federation List of Honour, the highest award the FDI can bestow on a member, and limited to 30 living members throughout the world who have made distinguished contributions to international dentistry and the FDI.

New ADAF Vice President

Steven W. Kess, vice president of professional relations, Sullivan-Schein Dental, a Henry Schein, Inc., company, is the foundation's new vice president. Kess, who has served on the ADAF board for seven years, succeeds Walter Lamacki, D.D.S., who served in the office for six years until his retirement last month.

"The foundation has an outstanding roadmap for the future," Kess said, "and now it's time to develop the proposed National Endowment for Dental Education and other innovative projects that will further motivate and galvanize the oral health community into supporting these important and timely initiatives."

"We are extremely pleased over the selections of Dr. Dugoni and Mr. Kess to guide the ADA Foundation," said James B. Bramson, D.D.S., ADA executive director. "We look forward to their leadership and many future contributions in guiding the foundation's continuing efforts to help improve the nation's oral health."
