Race the Reaper
PORTLAND, Oregon--All-Terrain Fitness, an independent fitness company, has announced a successful conclusion to the inaugural Race the Reaper.
Held Oct. 1-2, 2011, at Flying-M-Ranch in Yamhill, Ore., Race the Reaper challenged nearly 1,000 casual to elite athletes, adventure racers, and teams over the 5.7-mile obstacle course. In racing, they helped raise money for Oregon Mission of Mercy.
MOM is an annual two-day free dental clinic that serves the needs of the uninsured, the underinsured and those with difficulty getting to a dentist, through portable dental stations set up in a Portland public arena.
“Runners let us know that Race the Reaper earned its reputation as ‘the toughest obstacle race in Oregon,’ and we plan to up the ante with even more gruesome challenges in 2012,” said Jenn Chesney, All-Terrain Fitness co-founder and Ace certified personal trainer.
“Our first year success was possible because of the enthusiastic participants, support of our sponsors and volunteers.”
“We had close to 1,000 people participate in the race, and we are thrilled to have raised money for this great cause,” said Kevin Gilmore, All-Terrain Fitness co-founder and certified personal trainer. “Our goal is to double participation for 2012, and we’re headed in the right direction."

The extreme run and obstacle course included 21 challenges designed by ex-military civil and mechanical engineers including “skeletons pass,” the “tunnel of doom,” three water crossings and upper-body wall and rope climbing tests, spanning 5.7 miles on rough terrain. Participants received bragging rights, a T-shirt, a medal, and for those at least 21-years-old, a Ninkasi Brewing or Fire Mountain Brew House beer token.
Key event sponsors, many who had teams participate in the race include, Gerber knives, Susan Weinberg, DMD, Alpha Broadcasting and Westside Endodontics. Their sponsorship directly supports the efforts of Oregon Mission of Mercy, which in 2010, provided more than $800,000 worth of free dental services. This year’s MOM clinic will take place Nov. 21-22 at the Oregon Convention Center.
