“You’ll never get out of this business.”
I’m sure I had a puzzled look on my face when an industry veteran said this to me at my first dental meeting more than 12 years ago. I mean, come on, I had just come into the dental industry from sports public relations and was just getting my bearings as the new editor of Proofs. Suddenly I’m in the industry for life? Well, we’ll see about that, I thought as I walked away.
To this day, I’m not sure if he was psychic or just loved the business, but here I am, 12 years later, telling you that I think I’m ready to proclaim myself an “industry lifer.” I love what I do, I love the people with whom I work (both in the industry and at my home office in Tulsa), and I love being part of a dynamic, ever-evolving industry that truly has the power to change lives. What’s not to like?
I’ve also found that now, anytime someone new comes into the industry, I comment, “You realize you’re never getting out of dental, right?” Once people get into our business, they like what they see and they stay. I’ve seen it time and time again … and I see it again in the initial results of the survey we recently conducted with Proofs readers.
I took the first 100 responses and looked at what you and your colleagues said. Of those 100 responses, 71 had worked in the dental industry 20 years or more! That’s an amazing number to me, but it doesn’t surprise me. People love this business and they continue to be a part of it for a long time. I see it. You see it. We all see it.
Longevity is just one of the things I took away from the initial results of our survey. You can see more of the initial results by clicking here.
AND … please notice that I said “initial results.” That means that I am still looking for your input. Simply click on this link and help us with this survey that will take less than four minutes of your time. In exchange, I’ll enter your name for a $500 Visa or American Express gift card. Yep, a possible $500 for four minutes of your time. Sound fair to you?
Again, click here to take our survey. From one dental lifer to another, I thank you for your help.
