PORTLAND, Oregon--Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry Dean Jack Clinton, DMD, has been named president of the U.S.A. section for the International College of Dentists.

Clinton received the Presidential Symbol of Office Oct. 8 from outgoing president Theodore M. Roberson, DDS, at an ICD dinner dance that honored new fellows at the Peabody Orlando Hotel in Orlando, Fla. Clinton officially assumes office Jan. 1, 2011.

“I feel good about the opportunity to help revitalize the U.S.A. section of the ICD,” said Dr. Clinton. “Our goal in the next few years is to reform the foundation for the U.S.A. section, building upon an endowment that has been created for special projects.”

The ICD inducted Dr. Clinton as a fellow in 1991. Membership into the International College of Dentistry is by invitation only, and is reserved for dentists who have made significant contributions to the dental profession, the community and their families.

There are 15 sections of the ICD throughout the world. The ICD, with thousands of members worldwide, is considered the preeminent dental organization charged with advancing dentistry worldwide.

Dr. Clinton is a native Oregonian, born and raised in Lakeview. He worked his way through dental school, graduating in 1964. Following graduation, he accepted a part-time faculty position in the then-University of Oregon Dental School (precursor to OHSU School of Dentistry), along with an associateship in a northeast Portland dental practice. Four years later, Clinton accepted a full-time faculty position.

In the past 46 years, Dr. Clinton has held a variety of administrative roles, including acting associate dean of clinical affairs (1982), assistant dean for student affairs and clinical management (1983 to 1989), associate dean for patient services (1989 to 1995), associate dean for clinical affairs (1995 to 2002), and executive associate dean (2002), prior to becoming interim dean in 2003. Clinton was appointed dean of OHSU School of Dentistry Sept. 1, 2003.

Clinton has been active in the school’s Alumni Association, serving as president from 1979-1980. He received the Alumnus of the Year Award in 2001. He and his wife, Mary, have two children and three grandchildren.
