Ivoclar Vivadent donates $100,000 for emergency relief in Nepal

Ivoclar Vivadent (Schaan, Liechtenstein) has donated $100,000 for emergency relief and assistance in the re-establishment of dental health services. The company described the donation as "an expression of solidarity and a contribution to helping the people left destitute by the earthquake in Nepal." The $100,000 will go to immediate aid to the Red Cross, which is helping survivors at disaster scenes.

The company is in contact with the Nepal Dental Association and has pledged to sustain assistance in the re-establishment of dental services in the country.

HHS issues recommendation for community water fluoridation

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released its final Public Health Service recommendation for the optimal fluoride level in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. The new recommendation is for a single level of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. It updates and replaces the previous recommended range (0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter) issued in 1962.

The change was recommended because Americans now have access to more sources of fluoride (e.g., toothpastes, mouth rinses) than they did when water fluoridation was first introduced. As a result, there has been an increase in fluorosis, which, in most cases, manifests as barely visible lacy white marking or spots on the enamel. The new recommended level will maintain the protective decay prevention benefits of water fluoridation and reduce the occurrence of dental fluorosis.-HHS press release 27 Apr 2015
