FLORIDA--In May 2008, the Academy of Laser Dentistry announced the 2009 Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship.

The program is designed to promote dental laser education and acknowledge dental students who have presented exceptional papers in lasers in dentistry.

The program encourages undergraduate and graduate dental students to broaden their understanding of lasers in dentistry, provides financial award to enable students to present their work at the Academy's annual meetings in either poster presentations or scientific and clinical lectures, and encourages the investigation of the various laser wavelengths and their tissue interactions and the correct and safe use of lasers in dentistry.

This description of the program is according to Dr. Peter Rechmann, ALD's president and professor of the Division of Prosthodontics and director of the Clinical Sciences Research Group, Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at University of California San Francisco.

Scholarships will be presented to up to three dental students to attend and present their work during ALD's 16th annual conference April 22-25, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The selection is based on an abstract of laser research or clinical case studies submitted for presentation. Funding for each successful candidate will cover one year of ALD membership, Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Course application fees at ALD 2008 ($595), full conference registration ($1,140), round trip coach air transportation, up to five nights hotel accommodation at the Green Valley Ranch Resort ($239 per night) plus a small cash award for first ($500), second ($250) and third ($100) place.

Criteria for eligibility are determined by the applicant's demonstrated academic achievement in the study of lasers in dentistry. Applicants must be undergraduate dental students, graduate students in general practice, and graduate students in any specific dental specialty.

Application forms and instructions are available at Academy of Laser Dentistry.
