ADEA honors contributions to dental education

American Dental Education Association will recognize contributions of dental educators, researchers, and students Feb. 27-March 3 at the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The American Dental Education Association will recognize the contributions of dental educators, researchers, and students Feb. 27-March 3 at the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Washington, D.C.

A complete listing of awards follows.

Richard W. Valachovic, DMD, MPH, is the recipient of the ADEA Distinguished Service Award. Given by the ADEA Board of Directors, this award recognizes significant contributions to education, research, and ADEA.

ADEA President Ronald J. Hunt, DDS, MS, will honor nine leaders with Presidential Citations for their service to ADEA.They are:

*Eugene L. Anderson, PhD, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research, American Dental Education Association
*Charles N. Bertolami, DDS, DMedSc, Herman Robert Fox Dean and Professor, New York University College of Dentistry
*Martha M. Bushong, MS, Director of Communications and Advancement Services, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry
*Rowland A. Hutchinson, DDS, MS, Dean Emeritus, University of Louisville School of Dentistry
*Nadeem Y. Karimbux, DMD, MMSc, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Associate Professor, Harvard School of Dental Medicine
*James J. Koelbl, DDS, MS, MJ, Founding Dean, Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine
*Laura M. Neumann, DDS, MPH, Associate Executive Director, Division of Education, American Dental Association
*Ronald L. Tankersley, DDS, President, American Dental Association
*Anne Wells, EdD, Associate Executive Director, ADEA Division of Educational Pathways, American Dental Education Association

ADEA, in association with the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity, will name Russell Taichman, DMD, DMS., the recipient of the ADEA/Alpha Omega Foundation/Leonard Abrams Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Taichman is the director of the Scholars Program in dental leadership and professor of dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations Orna Shanley Prize will be presented to Indiana University School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co./National Dental Association Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute will be presented to Daphne C. Ferguson-Young, DDS, MSPH, associate professor, Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellence in Teaching Award will be given to Andrew I. Spielman, DMD, PhD, professor and associate dean for academic affairs, New York University College of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Allied Dental Educators Fellowship will be awarded to Joycelyn A. Dillon, RDH, MA, assistant professor, New York City College of Technology.

The ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship will be awarded to Marilyn S. Lantz, DMD, PhD, MSD, associate dean for academic affairs and professor, University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Junior Faculty Award will be presented to Natasha M. Flake, DDS, PhD, MSD, assistant professor, University of Washington School of Dentistry.

The Olav Alvares Awards for Outstanding Articles Published in the Journal of Dental Education will be presented to:

*Katherine M. Howard, PhD, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine
*Carilynne Yarascavitch, DDS, MSc, graduate student at the Faculty of Dentistry and Research Fellow at the Wilson Center for Research in Education, University of Toronto

The ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers will be given to Lisa M. Johnson from Idaho State University and Kylie J. Siruta from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship will be given to Marlaina Reich, RDH, clinical assistant professor, Baylor College of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Preventive Dentistry Scholarships will be given to the following predoctoral students:
