California periodontist receives accolades

Dr. Michael G. Newman is the 2007 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology's Gold Medal Award, the highest honor bestowed by the AAP.

CHICAGO--Michael G. Newman, DDS, is the 2007 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology's Gold Medal Award, the highest honor bestowed by the AAP.

He is an Adjunct Professor Emeritus of Periodontology at the University of California School of Dentistry at Los Angeles. Dr. Newman is a consultant to the American Dental Association and a co-chairman of the Third International Conference on Evidence-Based Dentistry.

The Gold Medal Award, is given annually to recognize a member for his or her outstanding contributions and services to the Academy and understanding of the field of periodontology. The award is funded by Sunstar Americas, Inc.

"Newman is recognized as a leading researcher, scholar and educator in periodontics," said Preston D. Miller, Jr., DDS, and 2006-2007 AAP president. "The Academy is proud to give Dr. Newman this award. He has received numerous awards from the AAP including the Fellowship award in 2001, the Presidential Award in 2002, and a Special Citation in 2004. His other honors and awards include the Achievement Award from the California Society of Periodontists among many others."

A member for almost 30 years, Newman has served the AAP in numerous capacities, including as past president of the AAP, chairman of the Scientific Coordinating Committee and co-chairman of the World Workshop in Periodontics.

A diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology, Newman received his dental degree in 1972 from the University of California at Los Angeles, his certificate of periodontics from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1974 and a certificate in microbiology from the Forsyth Institute in 1974. Newman's work in the microbiology of periodontal disease and in evidence-based dentistry have contributed greatly to advancing knowledge.

Newman is the senior author of the most widely used periodontal text book in the world, Carranza's Clinical Periodontology, and he is the Editor and Chief of the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice (Elsevier).
