In a new clinical study, a muco-adhesive patch was found to be "highly effective for pain reduction and healing time" in both patients with single ulcers and recurrent aphthous stomatitus. The study was presented on Sept. 19, at the world's largest gathering of otolaryngologists in New York, and has been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in October.
Here are some of the study highlights:
• Active patches caused pain to disappear within 20 minutes, compared to 3.16 days for untreated single ulcers and 5.58 days for recurrent aphthous stomatitus.
• Patches healed canker sores completely within 1.5 days, compared to nine days for untreated single sores and 10.5 days for recurrent ulcers.
• A total of 248 patients were involved in the controlled, double-blind, placebo-based study.
• "Plain" (untreated with natural "actives") patches performed better than no treatment, but not nearly as well as active patches.
The study was conducted at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The patch works by "sealing" and isolating the mouth ulcer from contact with the tongue, teeth, food and toxins, and by releasing effective, natural, active ingredients directly on the sore. Pain-relieving menthol is the "active" ingredient, but citrus oil and magnesium probably provide added efficacy.
"The Canker Cover patch will be introduced into the U.S. market this year," said Eve McClure, president of Quantum, Inc., the company that has attained North American marketing rights for the breakthrough treatment. "Interest is high among top drug chains, mass merchandisers, dentists, and doctors. This is the only canker sore treatment that both relieves and heals. We anticipate rapid sales."
