Some laugh, while others are relieved there is an alternative dental care

People stop several times a day to take a picture of the sign: "Gluten-free dentistry."

Some think it's a joke -- a spoof of the growing anti-gluten movement in an uber health-conscious city such as Boulder.

Others think it's about time.

"It is funny. But it's also legitimate," says dentist Jeffrey Patrician, who opened his office in Boulder a little more than six months ago at 4520 Broadway. "They either laugh at it or are thrilled that they have this alternative. Or both." Either way, he says his office has gained clients because of the offering. Experts estimate about 1% of Americans have Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that is treated by eliminating gluten from the diet. An additional 6% are gluten sensitive, without the celiac diagnosis, according to the Center for Celiac Research and Treatment. For these people, that means no wheat, barley, rye or a cross between wheat and rye called triticale.
