Become involved in AAWD

I had the privilege of being part of the 2003 AAWD meeting in Nashville, Tenn., July 19 - 20, as a speaker and guest. What an incredible two days! The networking and leadership of this fine group of women dentists were overwhelmingly positive. To see dentists of 30-plus years interact with younger dentists, students, and their faculty members was a heartwarming experience. My thanks to the officers, committee people, and the AAWD executive director for inviting me. I encourage every female dentist who is not a member of AAWD to register and become involved. I look forward to seeing all of you at a future AAWD conference.

Kudos to the WDJ editor and staff for another outstanding issue — July/August 2003. I have been a member of AAWD since dental school and currently serve as its director of federal services. I am also an Active Duty U.S. Army Dental Corps officer newly assigned as assistant program director for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) two-year program. Our residency classes reflect the changing demographics in dentistry. Three women dentists, two U.S. Army officers, and one Canadian officer make up the junior class. Of the eight senior residents, three officers are women dentists.

We understand that the article, "Early Caries Detection" (July/August 2003 WDJ) was the first reference to this important conference available in print. I presented this article and "Caries Detection and Intervention" (March/April 2003 WDJ) as part of a literature review in a recent junior resident Comprehensive Care Seminar, "Modern Management of Dental Caries." Effective early caries detection and management is mission-essential to achieve the Army's oral health goals for the world's largest dental care system. WDJ is a valuable resource as it cuts through the jargon and translates research into clinical practice. This is another way to put women's leadership at AAWD in the spotlight as a leader in oral health too. Thank you!
