Difficulty in finding a job as a dental hygienist in Georgia

Observation: Georgia is one of those states where it’s claimed that there’s a dental hygiene school on every corner (at least in the Atlanta metro area, which provided about half of the survey responses for the state). So no one thinks finding a job is easy, and the 59% who thinks it’s “very difficult” surpass the national average by almost 20 percentage points.

Observation: If finding a job is difficult, just imagine the difficulty in asking for a raise in Georgia. All of the percentages above are well below national averages, except for the last two categories.

Most common hourly pay rates in Georgia

$28, $32, $35, $36, $40

Observation: When there’s a surplus of manpower, salaries can spiral downwards, and that may be the case here. The percentage of Georgia hygienists earning $27 to $29 an hour is now at 26%.

Descriptions of pay arrangements based on production or commission

• I get 45% of all production, which sounds great, but we take all dental insurance policies, which leaves the commission very low.
• Bonus structure: $20 for scheduling a new patient (who calls on the phone). $20 for scheduling Zoom.
