Difficulty in finding a job as a dental hygienist in Maryland

Observation: Maryland is another one of those few states that hedged against saying it is “very” difficult to find a job. Close to half preferred to say it’s “somewhat” difficult.

Observation: The 36% who received a raise within the last year should count their blessings. The national average is 26%

Most common hourly pay rates in Maryland

$40, $45

Observation: 65% of the respondents indicated they were practicing in either the Baltimore or Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas. The most common hourly rates above, of course, are higher than the national average.

Descriptions of pay arrangements based on production or commission

  • Based on a certain production number, receive 33% on initial production and jumps to 50% after production reaches a certain amount.
  • There are different rates. Morning rate= 33% of production except doctor exam, and afternoon and Saturday rate = 37%. Also get 43% if “you come and cover another hygienist” out sick or on a planned vacation. You have the option to get paid on hourly at $32 per hour. Generally no one works that way since we average $42 hour over the two week pay period.
  • 30% of production but insurance write offs are also taken out
  • 37% (after insurance write offs) on prophy only and X-rays if allowed to take them. No perio, no sealants, no exams.
