Dyson halts sales of CameraJet after reports of product failures
On September 1, Dyson entered the dental market by launching CameraJet, its new electric toothbrush outfitted with a built-in camera, machine learning, and a targeted liquid jet.
Only a month after its release, however, the toothbrush has become temporarily unavailable as Dyson addresses a manufacturing issue affecting some units, alongside consumer reports of overheating, charging problems, and other device failures.
In a September 30 statement, Dyson UK said one production batch of CameraJet’s jet tubes experienced a process issue that created the potential for water seepage and affected the performance of a small number of products.¹
The company said it had isolated the affected products, resulting in a temporary out-of-stock position, and apologized to customers. Dyson added that it remained “in full production and shipping product,” although as of October 5, the CameraJet was still unavailable for purchase on Dyson’s US website. The product page remained active and allowed customers to sign up for availability notifications.¹
Dyson told Cybernews that CameraJet had received a positive response and strong global demand. At the same time, Cybernews reported consumer complaints involving overheating, charging problems, water-related defects, and device failures.²
One consumer quoted in reporting cited by Inc. said the device stopped working after about a minute of use.³
The problems represent an early setback for Dyson’s first entry into the oral-care market. The CameraJet, priced at $499.99, took six years to develop and uses a built-in camera to analyze up to 28 images per second and direct bursts of liquid into interdental spaces.³
